Airkenya Update from Nairobi

A recent photo of MSN 80 5Y-BMP of Airkenya taken at Wilson Airport in Nairobi in mid-November. Although missing a propeller it doesn't appear to have succumbed to the stage of parts reclamation quite yet.

Dash-7 Archive Update

Addition of the history files is continuing, with aircraft up to and including MSN 80 uploaded, along with a selection of photographs to accompany many of the pages.

A couple of notes with respect to the files already uploaded:

They are still a work in progress, even though they have been uploaded. Once the complete production run has been finished, I will go back and make certain adjustments. These will include things like ensuring company names/locations match from aircraft to aircraft, and adding further details that may have come to light.

At that time I will also go back and finalize the way that the U.S. Army EO-5C fleet is shown, and add more pertinent details. Right now there is a large variance in the way the registered owner/operator appears, partially because of the unique civil/military mixing, but I will get that sorted out.

I also intend to increase the information on the Voyageur and Trans Capital fleets with respect to the United Nations activities - I currently have about 3 pages of notes that need to be validated and then inserted into the histories.

Lastly, you'll note that probably 75% of the photographs uploaded do not, as yet have the details or credit line attached. This will be done before the history files are finalized.

There have been a good number of new subscriptions, which shows that the old -7 has a bit of a cult following...and that is of course great.  Additional information and photographs are gladly received as always.

DHC-7 Archive Update

Over the past week I have been working mostly on adding items to the Archive side of the blog, where you can now find the histories of 34 DHC-7's. There are also some additional pages that have only some photographs added. So, for the immediate future this will continue to be a work in progress.

With respect to the history pages, what appears in most cases is an initial compilation of data from many sources, and this will undoubtedly be tweaked and added to once all aircraft produced have been completed. One of the sources of the base data has been the production history compiled by the late Michael J. Ody, whose work was instrumental in building Twin Otter Archive as well. Unfortunately at this time I don't have access to his copious back notes, which were a crucial part of the process in preparing Twin Otter Archive.

Continue to check regularly for additions and changes, and of course any news on the DHC-7 fleet overall will be covered as part of the main blog.

Addition of Aircraft Histories & Photos

As I mentioned back in the initial post, the small numbers of operational Dash-7's does not necessarily marry well to a blog format that concentrates largely on activity driven news. The up side to that however is that the small number of aircraft built does allow for the development of Dash7Spotter into a site that mirrors Twin Otter Archive. The central blog itself reporting on news of the global Dash-7 fleet, and Dash-7 operators, and now with the addition of individual aircraft histories and photos, in a similar format to Twin Otter Archive.

I have begun the groundwork on this part of the project, and have started adding a selection of early MSN's which can be found in what is currently called "Other Pages & Pictures" in the right side panel of your screen. As I progress, the pictures currently held in the various operators galleries will be moved into the history page for the individual serial.

The Dash-7 still has a strong enthusiast following and while not a commercial winner for the manufacturer, it successfully filled a segment of the market that no other aircraft of the era could. Even today, some forty years after the first aircraft flew, it still fills a particular niche with major operators such as Air Tindi, Voyageur Airways, Trans Capital Air and the U.S. military.

Full House at the City Center

Today's arrival of C-FJHQ is going to be a tight squeeze at Toronto Island where there are already seven  DHC-7's currently on the ground, as can be seen in the photos below.

On the main Trans Capital ramp are C-FPBJ (MSN 9), C-FERO (MSN 113) and C-GVPP (MSN 72) with another unidentified one inside the hangar. I can see that the hangared one is a 103 series, which only leaves C-FWYU (MSN 12) or C-GTGO (MSN 106).

Over on the far side of the field an additional three aircraft can be found, C-GNUY (MSN 33), C-GYTZ (MSN 77) and C-GVWD (MSN 108)

Marie, ON and it reversed the same pattern on 13-Aug-2015. As seen in the earlier photo (below) the aircraft maintains its all white U.N. scheme, but with Voyageur titles.

Welcome to Dash7Spotter

Welcome to Dash7Spotter, the third blog which joins TwinOtterSpotter which began in 2012, and Dash8Spotter which was just launched this July.

The intent with the latest two blogs is really to eventually compliment more in depth websites on both the DHC-7 and DHC-8, similar to how TwinOtterSpotter works with TwinOtterArchive. The amount of activity in the world's remaining DHC-7 fleet, from only 113 examples total production does not translate very well to a blog format. There just isn't enough movements to have daily entries, so this will be a place to log what action does happen (and it does!) and develop a good library of photos of the aircraft over the years.

I have just begun to populate the Operator Galleries on the right of your screen, and over the coming days and weeks will continue to do that, and record any DHC-7 movements/transactions/photos as they occur.

An appropriate start to the blog is to feature MSN 80, DHC-7-102 C-GHSL which is seen taxiing out at Vancouver on 13-Jul-1986, in a photo by Henry Tenby. The arrival of this particular aircraft to AirBC coincided with the beginning of my career, which would span the next 25 years with the DHC-7 and DHC-8.
